I fell in love with film all over again while in the Caribbean. I was shooting with my grandfather’s MInolta SRT-202. Its pictures through the stock 50mm f/1.4 lens are creamy and gorgeous. When we came back from our anniversary trip I bit the bullet and decided to add to my vintage film camera collection.

    \x0a

eBay is your friend. I’ve scarcely used eBay in the last two years. The last thing I remember buying (coincidentally) was a LOMO LC-A from Siberia. Anyways, I was able to procure a new (is vintage gear really new?) Rokkor 28mm f/2.8 lens for my Minolta and also won a Yashica Electro 35 GS from the early 70’s.

    \x0a

I have yet to shoot with my new Rokkor Lens. The construction looks similair to my 50mm, although the aperture ring is plastic versus the metal ring on my 50mm. It’s a little less smooth feeling but functions perfectly. I’m planning on getting a Minolta to Canon adapter to take advantage to these prime lenses.

    \x0a

I’ve actually been pretty obsessed with my new Rangefinder. The Yashica Electro 35 GS is an aperture priority beastie. It’s about the same size as my Minolta, but the lens protrudes less and is much lighter. It fits in my bag along with my laptop, so it’s a good daily camera. The fast 45mm f/1.7 ensures that at ISO400 I’m able to shoot in most situations. I’m planning to hit lincoln road on south beach to do some street photography at some point in the next few weeks.

    \x0a

The above image is some of my camera collection. Next cameras I intend to acquire are the superheadz bbf (plastic lensed TLR 35mm camera) and a zero image 135 ( wood and brass pinhole camera )

    \x0a

And so I’m off for a week, skipping around the Caribbean with my little partner in life. We fly to San Juan PR and will board the Carnival Victory sometime in the evening. We’re slated to visit Anitgua, St. Kitts, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, and Dominica. This is a our first second honeymoon of many.

    \x0a

Monday, November 17th marks one year of marriage. I really don’t know where the time flew. It feels like just yesterday that I was holding my breath as Meli walked down the aisle towards me. I couldn’t have asked for a better year of marriage, happily exploring a new life with the most important person in my life…

    \x0a

So we’re celebrating in style: This marks Meli’s first time out of the country which is of course exciting. We’re looking forward to a week’s worth of new foods, cultures, and activities. We’ll see how my Spanish holds up during the trip.

    \x0a

Expect to see a ton of pictures in about a week. Hopefully I’m able to capture our trip pretty accurately. I’ve brought my Canon 40D as well as my 70’s Minolta and a bad full of film and a Holga (although I still need to find some medium format film at some point, i only have one roll)

    \x0a

At our wedding a year ago we gave CD’s as our favors, one mix from each of us. I’ll be posting my original mix as well as a new one, although it will have to wait until after the trip. I ran our of time to get the mix up with a hectic work schedule before my vacation.

    Kristin and Josh
Kristin and Josh Chez Sanchez was host to a swank shindig on October 25, the day after my birthday. We hosted a Black and White themed cocktail party, converting our house into a den of swank and awesomeness. Wine, beer, and other forms on innebriation flowed supported by a bevy of appetizers, dips, cheese plates, and other accoutrement.

    \x0a

In preparation Chris Fullman, my best friend, and I ran around town all day, picking up beer, doing last minute shopping and tying up loose ends. The Mass Mixtape was ready; the iPod charged; the ice in the freezer; french cuffs pressed; we were ready to rock.

    \x0a

Our signature drink was a French Martini (Vodka, Chambord, and pineapple juice). The drink was good, but we never quite could get the hang of the proportions. Most of my friends from work were able to make it, along with a smattering from my side of the family and Meli’s work family. I mainly stuck to brew and scotch, although there were a few shots of jager peppered in there.

    \x0a

The party was the definition of legen- wait for it - dary.

    \x0a

We broke out the ringlight and took goofy pictures, drank and talked, played poker, smoked cigars, you get the idea dear reader. It was everything I had hoped my birthday party could be. Everyone was dressed to the nines, the energy was good, and people were awesome.

    \x0a

The night ended with an impromptu sing along circle as I broke out my brand new acoustic, gift from the parents, and we all rifled through what we could sing or, rather, what we could remember the words to.

    \x0a

Collectively, everyone pitched in for a Playstation 3 and LittleBigPlanet. So between feeling loved, shiny new bobbles, and waking up next to my beautiful wife, it quite possibly was as close to a perfect day as I’ve accomplished in awhile (probably since the wedding).

    \x0a

Thank you to all who could make it, or those who couldn’t.

    Covers Mixtape
    \x0a \x0a \x0a
    \x0a

I’ve had some version of this *covers* mix for awhile now. At some point this week i just cut out the fat, trying to put out a mix that had some songs you hadn’t heard in awhile, by people most of us dont’ really know.

    \x0a

Also, I have added an index on mixtape.elsanchez.com, so there’s an active listing to all past mixtape URL’s as well as a way to check on newer stuff.

    \x0a

I have an ever-evolving new mixtape also of my own work. /augi/ represents some of the song work that I’ve been doing over the past two months, with a sort of greatest hits of some musings from the last 3-4 years. My iTunes has a ton of little bits that have been exported from my garageband [ i used to use it as a composing tool, thankfully i have all the mp3’s although I’ve dumped most of their source files ]. Most of it is total crap, but there are some moments where I know there’s a chance that something might be memorable. I need to re-record a lot of my older stuff. Having the ability to make a beat using logic or reason opens a lot of new avenues for me to explore. we’ll see where they take me.

    I miss...
    \x0a \x0a \x0a
    \x0a

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, specifically San Mateo County. I’ve lost touch with most of my old friends, having moved on, reluctantly at first, with my life here in South Florida. There are things of course that I hopelessly miss, reminders from my childhood; comfort items. When I first moved, many of the things I missed were people; friends; family; people i loved. That’s not the case anymore, as most of my loved ones live in South Florida now, although there is a certain eccentricity that I do miss about the people of my former home.

    \x0a

So for better or worse below is my list of things & places that I truly miss. Some are trite and superficial while others hold memories or experiences that are just not found in Miami.

    \x0a

Before I start the list, to be fair, there is a long list of things from my life here in Miami that if I were to move back, I’d miss just as readily. Cuban food, in any authentic form, probably does not exist in SF, along with my native Nicaraguan food or Art Basel for that matter. Every place holds its own experience and should be enjoyed.

    \x0a

    The List:

    \x0a

FogI miss fog. That might seem like the most retarded statement in the world to a lot of people, but I miss typical San Francisco weather. I miss it always dropping to 50º at night, no matter what temperature it was douring the day. I miss fog that rolls in over the foothills from Pacifica and Half Moon Bay like clockwork at 5:30pm. I used to sleep with my window cracked open at night. The chill night air would hit my face as I fell asleep enwrapped in my duvet. Man I miss not having to have air conditioning.

    \x0a

Camp SawyerI miss hills. This is the view I used to see from 280 driving to school every morning. I learned to drive stick by clomping through the hills of belmont. I prided my driving prowess, my car never creeping back even an inch with the assault from my furious left foot. Saying that South Florida is flat is an understatement. The Sahara’s dunes would look like Mt Everest in Florida. It’s that flat. Yeah. Put it this way, it’s like the Kate Hudson of the 50 States…

    \x0a

Proper Burrito Eating TechniqueI miss good Mexican food. Closest thing I have is Chipotle, or Moe’s here in FL. Both suck and are like comparing McDonald’s to the perfect Hamburger fired over open coals piled onto a brioche bun with all your favorite accroutement. One is microwaved and the other is made by a master chef; you decide which i lust after. Are we still talking about burritos?  Also, i miss watching people who actually know how to eat burritos. There is a proper burrito eating technique people. If you take the whole burrito out of its foil wrapper, you’re just making a mess and looking silly while putting it in your damned mouth.

    \x0a

Joann\'s CafeI miss Joann’s Cafe. Joann’s Cafe is a South San Francisco staple. Seasonal Pancakes, freshly baked muffins and pastries, and the best damned omelette’s this side of the Seine are all served at a little whole in the wall, in an industrial section of the city, replete with Formica tables and earthenware mugs. I’m pretty sure Joann sold the place to all her cooks about a year or two after I moved to the East Coast, but hear the food is still the same and they’re now open for more than just breakfast and lunch.

    \x0a

Rodeo CoveI miss Rodeo Cove. Rodeo cove is this little inlet, north of the Golden Gate, with a pebbly red coloured beach, a lagoon and lush coastal hills to climb. There’s a marine mammal rehab center about a mile away where you can visit and get a tour, and if you climb the southern hill, you’re met with spectacular views of the Pacific and an array of huge concrete bunkers that dot the grassy hills like slumbering giants. They used to defend the SF Bay during wartime. The army base has since been retired.

    \x0a

It\'s-ItI miss It’s-It Ice Cream sandwiches. My mom grew up on this stuff, as did I. Its a simply two oatmeal cookies with ice cream sandwiched in between and then dipped and a chocolate shell. They come in a few flavors (mint, coffee, chocolate, vanilla) the original vanilla being my favorite. They don’t sell them here and I crave them every now and then.

    \x0a

So there’s more things I miss of course, and some old friends I’d love to see, have a beer with and hang out, but all in all even the mighty It’s-It couldn’t get me back to SF at this point.

Chill The F*ck Out Mix, Vol. 2
    \x0a \x0a \x0a
    \x0a

BonusNew Mix to start off the week. I made a Chill the Fuck Out Mix, full of Bowie-Esque goodness that soothed me into my summer days a few years ago. This mix is a bit more of a modern take on the same principle. The mix won’t lull you to sleep, but it’s also Megadeath or DFA1979 free.

    \x0a

A couple of these songs came off the Nick & Norah soundtrack, which i’ve really enjoyed over the weekend. Meli and I had a date night of dinner and a movie, making sure no friends tagged along or met up with us. Yeah, we’re that popular. Mainly because we’re fricking awesome.

    \x0a

On that note, all of you should check on Kat Denning’s blog (norah from N&N infinite playlist) for some interesting reads from a surprisingly interesting person. It’s sad that its a surprise to find an actor interesting for once.

    An Afternoon with the Ainslies
    \x0a \x0a \x0a
    \x0a

Finishing Touches I had the pleasure of visiting my co-worker, and my wife’s high school friend, Melissa Camero Ainslie, and her husband Tom, for an early lunch this past Sunday.

    \x0a

Camero is participating in some sort of recipe challenge utilizing a soft goat cheese from cheesemaker Ile de France. She made a smorgasbord of goat cheese tartlets, stuffed with everything from Figs, Butternut Squash & Smoked Salmon, to Roasted Almonds, Honey, Dill and things I’m sure i’m forgetting in avariety of ways that made much more sense than my listing here.

    \x0a

The tasty mini tarts had very flaky crusts and were absolutely delicious. I’m a sucker for goat cheese anything, especially when washed down with some Redhook ESB and Hoegaaarden we had brought over. :)

    \x0a

The tartlets were followed by a Spicy Mussel Stew that left my belly full and dreaming of shiny black shells dancing along a bed of sea-foam.

    \x0a

I brought along the camera and thought I’d share a look into the mind of a Gourmand. I’ve always enjoyed this girl’s recipes, whether by looking at her flickr stream, visiting her blog, or stopping by her fab condo for a bite to eat.

    \x0a

It’s no secret that Jack White is one of my favorite Artists/Producers, so when I heard that he was working on the new title song for the next James Bond movie, my expectations were high. He collaborated with Alicia Keys for the title track, playing the drums, guitar & piano.

    \x0a

Coke Zero this week released a commercial, its soundtrack comprised of various themes from the title track produced by White & Keys. Jack White supposedly objects to the way the track has now been released, citing that he wanted it to have a much larger bang.

    \x0a

While the visuals are great and the song definitely is the hero of the commercial, i have to admit that I agree with Jack White. The understated release of such powerful motifs in the song, really work to dilute the song and the brand in some ways.

    \x0a

Furthermore, from a production standpoint alone, the splicing of the track’s themes and transitions are not ideal, and actually rather sloppy. I dont’ believe White or anyone producer for the matter, would really be enthralled with someone hacking their hard work sloppily just to fulfill a promotional piece.

    \x0a

My thoughts musically on the track are actually very high though. You hear that it is in fact very much a Jack White piece, but the song itself fits well into the new James Bond series: modern, powerful, yet with a sense of an older more sophisticated time. The drum work is actually my favorite part of what I’ve heard so far.

    \x0a

On some level, i had been afraid that with more money, with more people involved, that the music would suffer, becoming a bit more vanilla. I’m pleasantly relieved that this is not the case, as far as I can tell so far.

    \x0a

The movie premieres in London on October 31, 2008. My wife and I will be in line for the US premiere about two weeks later. Hopefully i can get my hands on the soundtrack before then, to really enjoy White’s track.

Tools of 1 Creative ProcessSaturday night I recorded. I’ve been playing with Logic Pro off and on for maybe a month. The learning curve on the software, with having no prior audio software experience, is a little steep. I’m just starting to really understand how to use the sequencer to create drum beats that are usable.

    \x0a

I was trying to go for a Disco-Punk thing in this song. Something inspired by DFA 1979 meets Beck, meets LCD Soundsystem, meets Ratatat? I fail miserably compared to those i’m taking inspiration from, but the song does sound like something I’d like, something I’d play. So, I take solace in that.

    \x0a

I’m using a 2.4GHz macbook with Logic Pro, a M-Audio Firewire Solo Music Interface to get my guitars as a line-in, NI Guitar Rig 2.2, an Am. Deluxe Strat, and a MIJ ‘54 Reissue P-Bass.

    \x0a

Ultimately, I’d love to finally record a cohesive set of songs with similair sound and themes running through them on my own. I have a few friends that I know that want to work on stuff together and could even provide vocal and rap track to things I make.

    \x0a

My next steps with this track are to add some vocals and maybe layer a few other tracks on top of that with a keyboard. I’m thinking of some blown out james brown style falsetto and some warbly hammond b-3 are in order.

Fast Boy Cycles makes bespoke single gear cycles for his customers. He fabricates custom wooden pieces, bike frames and touches that I’ve never honestly seen on a bike. The craftsmanship love and attention to detail is something hearkening back to a better time, a better place.

    \x0a

A similar note can be made for his photography. The transparency, the honesty of his imagery documents his life with a certain level of love and detail. The portraits of his girlfriend with their dog; the shots of his own artwork; the self portraits; There is something beautiful in both his digital and traditional photography.
